U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies amounted to 1.79 million TEUs in October (based on volumes at ports of origin), down 8.4% year on year for two back-to-back weeks of decline, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the Custom and Border Protection (CBP). From the previous month, they shrank 0.1%. In the first 10 months, the U.S. imported 17 million TEUs from the same Asian countries and regions, up 0.7% year on year.
In October, imports from China accounted for 914,395 TEUs, up 13.5%; from Vietnam, 239,642 TEUs, up 21.6%; from South Korea, 183,716 TEUs, down 4.4%; from Singapore, 68,331 TEUs, down 25.1%; and from India, 64,204 TEUs, down 21.3%. Imports from Japan ranked eighth, amounting to 37,739 TEUs, down 13.2%. From September, however, they soared 44.2%.
Almost all commodities decreased year on year in October. Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated signs, illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS Code 94) decreased 7.2% to 267,623 TEUs. Plastics and articles thereof (HS Code 39) exceptionally increased 6.4% to 188,765 TEUs. Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances as well as parts thereof (HS Code 84) shrank 3.3% to 172,568 TEUs; electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers; television image and sound recorders and reproducers, parts and accessories of such articles (HS Code 85), 4.2% to 158,271 TEUs; toys, games and sports requisites; parts and accessories thereof, 17.4% to 111,684 TEUs; and Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling-stock, and parts and accessories thereof, 8.6% to 89,807 TEUs.
In the first 10 months, however, machinery, plastics and rubber products expanded from a year earlier.
Overall U.S. container imports totaled 2.31 million TEUs in October, down 6.6% year on year.
