U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies amounted to 1.86 million TEUs in August (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 4.1% year on year, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). From the previous month, however, they shrank 2.9%. In the first eight months, the U.S. imported 13.63 million TEUs from the 10 Asian countries and regions, up 3.5%.
By origin, imports from China decreased 5.5% to 994,958 TEUs last month but managed to hold the leading share of the pie. Those from Vietnam accounted for 260,897 TEUs, up 40.4%; from South Korea, 191,073 TEUs, down 9.8%; and from India, 89,596 TEUs, up 33%. Containers from Japan came at the bottom of the top 10, which diminished 7.3% to 32,886 TEUs.
Meanwhile, overall U.S. container imports added up to 2.54 million TEUs in August, up 3.5%. On a carrier-owned-container (COC) basis, those from China, which accounted for the largest part, decreased 5.8% from July, or 53,552 TEUs; and from Vietnam, down 0.5%, or 1,510 TEUs.
