U.S. container imports from Japan jumped 12.2% y to 62,988 TEUs in July (based on volumes at ports of origin), swelling year on year for the first time in four months, according to Descartes Datamyne. In the first seven months (January-July), they decrease a slight 1.9% to 378,731 TEUs as they continued to fall in April, May and June before coming back to mark the double-digit improvement in July.

Direct shipments from Japan to the U.S. slid 2.3% to 38,160 TEUs, while those transshipped on the day grow a notable 45.4% to 24,828 TEUs, exceeding 24,613 TEUs in December 2022 to set a new record.

Of those transshipped in third countries/regions, 17,266 TEUs were via South Korea, up 53.5%; 4,107 TEUs via China, up 54.6%; 2,421 TEUs via Taiwan, up 21.7%; and 310 TEUs via Singapore, down 62.1%.

By origin, 15,506 TEUs were from Tokyo, down 3.1%; 11,702 TEUs from Nagoya, up 3%; 8,963 TEUs from Kobe, up 12.8%; 789 TEUs from Yokohama, down 71.9%; and 486 TEUs from Osaka, up 155.8%.
