The World Container Index (WCI) stood at 3,295 points last Thursday, down 7% from the previous week and 36% from the corresponding week of 2024, according to Drewry. It is a sign that the recent surge in imports to the U.S., which occurred after the temporary halt of higher tariffs, will fail to have the lasting impact that had initially been expected.
In Week 25, spot rates plunged 20%, or $1,212 to $4,702 per FEU from Shanghai to Los Angeles. Those from Shanghai to New York fell 10%, or $701 $6,584 per FEU, but in the last six weeks from May 8, they jumped 81%.
In contrast, spot rates on the Asia-Europe trade were brisk, surging 12%, or $334 to $3,171 per FEU from Shanghai to Rotterdam, and increasing 1%, or $21 to $4,075 per FEU from Shanghai to Genoa.
