Ossama Rabiee, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), announced the beginning of a new phase in the restoration of mega-containership traffic through the canal.
On Wednesday, the Suez Canal witnessed the transit of the 154,000-gross-ton containership CMA CGM Osiris. It is also worth noting that the canal accommodated the passage of two 128,000-TEU vessels from the same shipping line on Tuesday, the CMA CGM Aquila and the CMA CGM Callisto.
The CMA CGM Osiris is operated in Phoenician Express (BEX2), an Asia-Mediterranean service by the Ocean Alliance, which consists of CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping Lines, Evergreen Marine and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL). Measuring 366 meters in length and 51 meters in breadth, the 15,536-TEU freighter has become the first large container ship to transit the Canal from Bab al-Mandeb Strait since March 2024, following a temporary halt in the traffic of such vessels due to regional challenges. Its transit marks a culmination of the marketing efforts made by the SCA in light of a recent announcement offering a 15% discount for containerships with a net tonnage exceeding 130,000 tons, whether laden or ballast, for a period of three months.
