The Port of Osaka handled 178,659 TEUs of foreign-trade containers in March, up 9.2% from a year earlier, registering a year-on-year improvement for the second consecutive month, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the Osaka Ports and Harbors Bureau.
Exports accounted for 77,691 TEUs, up 8%, and imports, 100,968 TEUs, up 10.1%. As for loaded containers, exports decreased 1.4% to 35,089 TEUs, but imports jumped 13.4% to 98,049 TEUs for a total of 133,138 TEUs, up 9.1%. Empty containers totaled 45,521 TEUs, up 9.4%.
In the first quarter (January-March), Osaka processed 486,652 TEUs, up 3.9%, consisting of 215,695 TEUs of exports, up 4.7%, and 270,957 TEUs of imports, up 3.2%. Loaded containers amounted to 354,416 TEUs, up 2.4%, of which 89,822 TEUs were exported, down 5.2%, and 264,594 TEUs were imported, up 5.2%. Empties added up to 132,236 TEUs, up 8.1%.
