U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies added up to 1.64 million TEUs in March (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 12.8% from March 2024 for 19 consecutive months of year-on-year growth, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).From the previous month, there was a minute increase of 0.4%. Overall imports totaled 2.38 million TEUs, up 11.8% from a year earlier.

Looking at imports from the Asian countries and regions individually, those from China accounted for 835,448 TEUs, up 10.3% year on year, holding the largest share of the pie. Imports from South Korea were down 1.3% to 215,272 TEUs; from Vietnam, up 41.5% to 184,685 TEUs; from India, up 26% to 87,622 TEUs; and from Singapore, up 9% to 82,947 TEUs. Imports from Japan, which finished in eighth place, jumped 14.4% to 42,620 TEUs.

In the first three months (January-March), U.S. container imports from Asia amounted to 5.11 million TEUs, up 11% from the corresponding months of 2024. Imports totaled 7.09 million TEUs, up 8.9%.

By Asian origin, imports from China came to 2.84 million TEUs, up 9.5%; from South Korea, 628,524 TEUs, up 7.8%; from Vietnam, 543,721 TEUs, up 22.8%; from India, 239,469 TEUs, up 10%; and from Singapore, 235,942 TEUs, up 13.5%. Those from Japan came in eighth again, which picked up 0.6% to 108,724 TEUs.
