Japan’s six major ports processed a combined 1.06 million TEUs of international containers in January, up 1.8%, which have enjoyed a year-on-year enlargement for two back-to-back months, according to preliminary figures tallied by the nation’s transport ministry. Exports accounted for 468,913 TEUs, down 3.5%, and imports, 587,856 TEUs, up 6.5%.

Looking at individual volumes, Tokyo handled 330,297 TEUs, up 6.5%, of which exports slid 1% to 133,481 TEUs, but imports jumped 12.3% to 196,816 TEUs. Kawasaki was responsible for 7,294 TEUs, up 6.1%, consisting of 3,246 TEUs of exports, down 2.8%, and 4,048 TEUs of imports, up 14.6%. Yokohama processed 198,762 TEUs, up 0.9%, exporting 95,494 TEUs, down 4.5%, and importing 103,303 TEUs, up 6.5%. Containers to and from Nagoya amounted to 194,244 TEUs, up 0.1%, which consisted of 87,570 TEUs of exports, down 8.5%, and 106,674 TEUs of imports, up 8.5%. Osaka exported 71,083 TEUs, down 0.3%, and imported 96,729 TEUs, down 2.3%, for a total of 167,812 TEUs, down 1.4%. Kobe incurred a decrease of 0.7% in throughput, which came to 158,360 TEUs, of which exports fell 3.2% to 78,074 TEUs, but imports rose 1.9% to 80,286 TEUs.
