The World Container Index (WCI) decreased 4% from the previous week to $2,264 per FEU in Week 12, according to Drewry. The composite index fell was 78% below the previous pandemic peak of $10,377 per FEU in September 2021 and the lowest since January 2024. However, it was 59% above the average of $1,420 per FEU in the pre-pandemic year of 2019. The year-to-date average closed at $3,127 per FEU, $242 higher than the 10-year average of $2,885 per FEU, which is inflated in the exceptional 2020-22 COVID period.

Freight rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles decreased 9%, or $248 to $2,658 per FEU, and those from Shanghai to New York, 7%, or $264 to $3,774 per FEU. Similarly, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam and from Rotterdam to New York reduced 2% to $2,463 per FEU and $2,316 per FEU, respectively. Those from Rotterdam to Shanghai, from New York to Rotterdam and from Shanghai to Genoa shrank 1% to $484 per FEU, $846 per FEU and $3,286 per FEU, respectively. Meanwhile, rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai remained stable.

Drewry expects rates to decrease slightly in the upcoming weeks.
