U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies amounted to 1.85 million TEUs in January (based on volumes at ports of origin), according to statistics Descartes Datamyne has compiled from data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). They increased 12.8% from a year earlier for the 17th consecutive month of year-on-year growth and established a new monthly record. From the previous month, however, they shrank 7.6%. Total container imports to the U.S. came to 2.49 million TEUs, up 10.3% year on year.
By origin, 1.07 million TEUs were imported from China, up 9.3%, which held the leading share of the pie. Containers from South Korea accounted for 212,374 TEUs, up 10.7%; from Vietnam, 193,334 TEUs, up 26.2%; from Singapore, 85,494 TEUs, up 38.9%; from Taiwan, 76,978 TEUs, up 6.3%; from India, 75,372 TEUs, up 32.5%; from Thailand, 59,115 TEUs, up 18.8%; and from Japan, 36,444 TEUs, up 8.1%.
