U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies amounted to 1.72 million TEUs in November (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 15.3% for the 15th consecutive month of year-on-year growth and a new November record, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data. From the previous month, however, they shrank 6.6%. In the first 11 months (January-November), the U.S. imported 18.59 million TEUs from the 10 Asia countries and regions, up 16.4%, which came close to the record set in the corresponding months of 2021. Overall imports to the U.S. came to 2.39 million TEUs last month, up 14.3%.

Looking at U.S. container imports from the Asian economies in November by origin, 983,573 TEUs were from China, up 15.8%; 193,858 TEUs from South Korea, up 10.9%; 177,978 TEUs from Vietnam, up 20.5%; 81,384 TEUs from India, up 29.5%; and 76,978 TEUs from Taiwan, up 19.3%. Japan was the eighth-largest source, from which 37,216 TEUs were imported, up 6.5%.

Meanwhile, U.S. container exports to the 10 Asian countries and regions totaled 464,131 TEUs in October (based on volumes at ports of destination), down 2.1% from September and 0.3% from October 2023, Descartes Datamyne unveiled at the same time. In detail, 105,746 TEUs were destined to China, down 22.1%; 65,203 TEUs to South Korea, up 36.6%; 49,748 TEUs to Vietnam, up 22.2%; 48,792 TEUs to Indonesia, up 12.1%; and 47,374 TEUs to Japan, down 2.3%.
