U.S. container imports from 10 major countries and regions in Asia amounted to 1.89 million TEUs in September (based on volumes at ports of origin), surging 17.3% from a year earlier, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). They have continued to grow year on year for the 13th consecutive month to hit a new monthly record for September. From August, they improved 5.4%. In the first nine months, the U.S. imported 15.05 million TEUs from the 10 Asian economies, up 17.2%. The total volume of containers imports to the U.S. last month came to 2.53 million TEUs, up 14.3%.

By port, 1.09 million TEUs came from China, up 15.6%; 208,937 TEUs from Vietnam, up 36.4%; 202,398 TEUs from South Korea, up 25.1%; 87,354 TEUs from India, up 27%; and 82,067 TEUs from Taiwan, up 15.7%. Imports from Japan plunged 34.4% to 29,450 TEUs, finishing in eighth place.

Meanwhile, U.S. container exports to the 10 major Asian countries and regions totaled 479,474 TEUs in August (based on volumes at ports of destination), up 11.2% year on year and 6.5% from July. Exports from China accounted for 115,529 TEUs, down 10.8%; from South Korea, 70,170 TEUs, up 67.1%; from Japan, 59,137 TEUs, up 17.5%; from India, 51,880 TEUs, up 25.5%; and from Malaysia, 40,776 TEUs, up 17%.
