On the Asia-Europe and -North America trades, half of direct port-pairs are offered by a single alliance. Conversely, 5% to 14% are offered by the Gemini Cooperation (Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd), the Premier Alliance (Ocean Network Express, or ONE; HMM; and Yang Ming Marine Transport), the Ocean Alliance (COSCO Shipping Lines, Evergreen Marine and Orient Overseas Container Line, or OOCL) and Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC),  which will result in strong competitive pressure on those port-pairs, according to Sea-Intelligence. It has compared the 2025 service networks by global shipping lines and calculated the level of competitiveness across the ports being serviced directly.

The Gemini Cooperation, the Premier Alliance and MSC have all announced 2025 networks, while Ocean Alliance has not, and given that the alliance structure continues unchanged, it is reasonable to assume only minor network changes for them.

On the Asia-Europe trade, MSC clearly will be offering the most direct port-port combinations, followed by the Ocean Alliance and Premier Alliance. On the Asia-North America trade, MSC and the Ocean Alliance will both offer the same level of direct connectivity; however, the Ocean Alliance will have a higher call frequency on the port-pairs they offer.
