International containers to and from Japan's six major ports increased across the board in May, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the nation's transport ministry. In total, 1.12 million TEUs were moved to and from the ports, up 2.6% year on year, which consisted of 548,295 TEUs of exports, up 2.2%, and 574,817 TEUs of imports, up 3.1%.
Individually, Tokyo handled 342,821 TEUs, up 0.6%, exporting 153,450 TEUs, down 0.9%, and importing 189,371 TEUs, up 1.9%. Kawasaki was responsible for 7,119 TEUs. Exports fell 5.9% to 3,488 TEUs, but imports ballooned 23% to 3,631 TEUs, a double-digit improvement for four months in a row. Throughput grew 4.3% to 224,121 TEUs at Yokohama, which comprised 118,032 TEUs of exports, up 4.8%, and 106,089 TEUs of exports, up 3.7%. Nagoya processed 201,612 TEUs, up 5%, of which exports climbed 4.4% to 102,581 TEUs, and imports, 5.7% to 99,031 TEUs. Containers to and from Osaka accounted for 168,196 TEUs, up 0.9%, of which exports waned 2.6% to 74,548 TEUs, but imports picked up 3.9% to 93,648 TEUs. Containers to and from Kobe amounted to 179,243 TEUs, up 3.5%, underpinned by growths of 6.4% to 96,196 TEUs in exports and 0.3% to 83,047 TEUs in imports.
