The Port of Shimizu in central Japan processed 195,304 TEUs of foreign-trade containers in the first half (January-June) of 2024, down 3.6% from a year earlier, according to preliminary figures unveiled by the Shizuoka Prefectural Government's Shimizu Port Authority. Domestic containers amounted to 55,173 TEUs, up 3.2%, for a total of 250,477 TEUs, down 2.2%. Regarding laden containers, exports accounted for 73,308 TEUs, down 6.6%, and imports, 95,623 TEUs, up 0.2%, while the remaining 26,373 TEUs were empty containers, down 8.1%.
In June, Shimizu handled 43,929 TEUs, up 2.8%. Foreign-trade containers amounted to 34,252 TEUs, down 0.8%, the first year-on-year contraction in two months. In contrast, domestic containers ballooned 17.9% to 9,677 TEUs. In respect to foreign-trade containers, exports decreased 1.3% to 12,996 TEUs, and imports, 2.2% to 16,498 TEUs. Empty containers totaled 4,758 TEUs, up 6.1%. Turning to domestic containers, 3,173 TEUs were outgoing, up 18.7%, and 1,863 TEUs were incoming, up 11.8%. Empties accounted for 4,641 TEUs, up 19.9%.
