U.S. container imports from 10 major economies in Asia amounted to 1.7 million TEUs in June (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 15.8% year on year, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne with data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). From the previous month, they expanded 2.2%. Overall imports totaled 2.33 million TEUs, up 12.9% from a year earlier.

Looking at imports from the Asian countries and regions, which increased across the board, more specifically, those from China surged 15.3% year on year to 971,711 TEUs, enjoying the leading share of the pie. They were followed by those from South Korea, which jumped 35.1% to 207,302 TEUs. Ranked third were those from Vietnam, which grew 7.2% to 157,360 TEUs. Container from Taiwan swelled 8.3% to 85,066 TEUs, finishing in fourth place. At the bottom of the top five were those from India, which soared 27.4% to 76,071 TEUs. Imports from Japan ballooned 16% to 38,747 TEUs, coming in eighth.

In the first half, the U.S. imported 9.49 million TEUs from the 10 Asian countries and regions (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 16.3% from the same six month of 2023. From the first half of the pre-pandemic year of 2019, they jumped 20.9%. Total imports to the U.S. aggregated 13.38 million TEUs, up 13.1% year on year, 70 of which were from the 10 Asian nations.

Focusing on imports from the Asia economies more specifically, those from China accounted for 5.35 million TEUs. up 15%; from South Korea, 1.18 million TEUs, up 25.6%; from Vietnam, 903,549 TEUs, up 23.8%; from Singapore, 441,139 TEUs, up 17.3%; and from Taiwan, 441,101 TEUs, up 3%. Imports from Japan jumped 24% to 227,638 TEUs, finishing in eighth place.

By commodity, furniture totaled 1.6 million TEUs, up 18.6%; machinery, 1.08 million TEUs, up 13.5%; plastics, 948,291 TEUs, up 15.9%; electronic devices, 885,067 TEUs, up 11.5%; and auto-related products, 596,502 TEUs, up 20.7%.
