Japan’s six major ports exported and imported a total of 1.03 million TEUs of foreign-trade containers in February, up 1.8%, which was their first year-on-year increase in five months, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the nation’s transport ministry. Exports decreased 2.3% to 515,464 TEUs, but imports increased 6.2% to 511,174 TEUs.

Individually, Tokyo processed 310,808 TEUs, up 4.3%, exporting 145,603 TEUs, up 1.8%, and importing 165,205 TEUs, up 6.7%. Kawasaki was responsible for 6,442 TEUs, up 8.5%, of which exports decreased 7.1% to 2,770 TEUs, but imports surged 24.2% to 3,672 TEUs. Throughput grew 7.3% to 214,001 TEUs at Yokohama, from which 111,197 TEUs were exported, down 1.8%, and to which 102,804 TEUs were imported, up 19.2%. Containers to and from Nagoya totaled 198,512 TEUs, up 3.9%, consisting of 103,874 TEUs of exports, down 1.8%, and 94,638 TEUs of imports, up 10.9%. Osaka handled 135,665 TEUs, down 0.4%, with exports waning 2.6% to 63,797 TEUs but imports picking up 1.7% to 71,868 TEUs. Kobe reported a decrease of 9.5%, processing 161,120 TEUs, of which 88,223 TEUs were exported, down 9.2%, and 72,987 TEUs were imported, down 10%.
