Container exports from 18 Asian economies to the U.S. ballooned 27.1% year on year to 1.57 million TEUs in March, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) with data from the Journal of Commerce (JOC)'s Port Impor/ Export Reporting Service (PIERS). The trade has witnessed a year-on-year throughput improvement for six straight months. In the first quarter (January-March), they jumped 22.6% to 4.87 million TEUs.

Exports improved from almost all of the 18 economies, with those from China, for example, hiking 26.5% to 782,495 TEUs; from South Korea, 38.8% to 130,568 TEUs; from Taiwan, 7.7% to 47,902 TEUs; and from Japan, 4.5% to 58,045 TEUs.

Overall shipments from ASEAN nations amounted to 419,598 TEUs, up 31.4%, which included 207,722 TEUs from Vietnam, up 49.5%; 90,146 TEUs from Thailand, up 22.1%; 42,528 TEUs from Indonesia, up 7.5%; and 36,106 TEUs from Malaysia, up 24%.

From South Asia, 129,131 TEUs were exported, up 28.5%, of which India was responsible for 102,014 TEUs, up 33.9%.
