The Port of Shimizu in central Japan handled 40,034 TEUs of containers in February, down 1% from a year earlier, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the Shizuoka Prefectural Government's Shimizu Port Authority. Overall container throughput at the port has been on the year-on-year decline for four months in a row.
Foreign-trade containers increased a minute 0.3% to 31,679 TEUs. As for loaded containers, 12,879 TEUs were exported, down 10.7%, and 15,145 TEUs were imported, up 13.9%. Empties totaled 3,655 TEUs, down 6.9%.
In January-February, Shimizu processed a total of 77,547 TEUs, down 3%, which included 61,166 TEUs of exports and imports. Exports of loaded containers accounted for 22,849 TEUs, down 9.4%, and imports, 30,501 TEUs, up 3%. Empty containers amounted to 7,816 TEUs, down 4.1%.
