Japan’s six major ports handled 1.17 million TEUs of containers in total in December 2023, down 0.5% from a year earlier, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the nation’s transport ministry. There was a minute shrinkage, but it was a year-on-year contraction for three months in a row. Exports increased 1.9% to 619,415 TEUs, but imports declined 3.1% to 552,103 TEUs.

Individually, Tokyo was responsible for 353,617 TEUs, down 5.7%, which consisted of 178,764 TEUs of exports, down 1.3%, and 174,952 TEUs of imports, down 9.8%. Kawasaki marked a double-digit improvement of 10.2%, processing 8,356 TEUs. Growth was obtained in both directions, with outbound containers rising 6.2% to 4,440 TEUs and inbound containers, 15.1% to 3,916 TEUs. Container traffic was favorable to and from Yokohama as well, swelling 4.8% TO 243,184 TEUs, of which exports accounted for 131,238 TEUs, up 4.7%, and imports, 111,946 TEUs, up 4.9%. Nagoya processed 220,681 TEUs, up 5.2%, which comprised 121,038 TEUs of outgoing shipments, up 5.6%, and 99,643 TEUs of incoming shipments, up 4.8%. Throughput improved 1% to 163,594 TEUs at Osaka, of which exports hiked 4.7% to 81,612 TEUs, but imports fell 2.5% to 81,982 TEUs. Containers to and from Kobe went down 4.8% to 181,197 TEUs, with exports waning 2.1% to 102,323 TEUs and imports, 8% to 79,664 TEUs.
