The Port of Tokyo handled 352,680 TEUs of foreign-trade containers in October 2023, down 10.3% year on year, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor. As for exports, loaded containers accounted for 88,744 TEUs, down 4.8%, and empty containers, 82,048 TEUs, down 11.7%. Meanwhile, 175,246 TEUs of loaded containers were imported, down 9.7%, and 6,642 TEUs of empty containers were imported, down 47.9%.

Laden containers to and from other domestic ports amounted to 20,529 TEUs, down 4.8%, and empties totaled 22,086 TEUs, down 7.9%. In total, full containers aggregated 284,519 TEUs, down 7.9%, and empties, 110,776 TEUs, down 14.6%.

In January-October, loaded containers totaled 2.52 million TEUs, down 7.2%, and unloaded containers, 856,339 TEUs, down 13%. In detail, 735,455 TEUs of loaded containers were exported, down 1.5%, while unloaded containers came to 821,955 TEUs, down 14.1%. Focusing on imports, 1.79 million TEUs were laden, down 9.3%, and 34,384 TEUs were empty, up 28.2%.

In respect to domestic containers, 190,478 TEUs were loaded, down 2.4%, and 218,538 TEUs were unloaded, down 2.4%. In total, 2.71 million TEUs were laden, down 6.9%, and 1.07 million TEUs were empty, down 11%.
