Container exports from Asia to Europe amounted to 1.27 million TEUs in October, according to Container Trades Statistics (CTS) data compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). They increased 14.7% from a year earlier, accomplishing a year-on-year improvement for eight straight months.

Exports from China and Hong Kong accounted for 945,641 TEUs, up 18.8%; from other parts of Northeast Asia, 140,799 TEUs, up 7.4%; and from Southeast Asia, 184,439 TEUs, up 2%.

By destination, exports increased to all regions, growing 5.9% to 784,728 TEUs to North Europe, 27.6% to 226,550 TEUs to the western Mediterranean and 37.1% to 259,608 TEUs to the eastern Mediterranean.

In January-October, Asia exported 13.8 million TEUs to Europe, up 6.5% year on year. In 2023, exports from Asia to Europe are expected to stand on par with their pre-pandemic volume in 2019.

Meanwhile, imports from Europe to Asia totaled 581,004 TEUs in October, up 1.5% from the corresponding month of 2022, which was their first year-on-year expansion in three months.

From North Europe, 399,740 TEUs were imported, down 3.4%, and from the western Mediterranean, 90,796 TEUs, down 2.5%. In contrast, those from the eastern Mediterranean jumped 38% to 90,468 TEUs.

To China, imports from Europe fell 1.6% to 289,954 TEUs, and to other parts of Northeast Asia, 5.7% to 117,655 TEUs. On the other hand, those to Southeast Asia ballooned 13.3% to 173,383 TEUs.

In the first 10 months, Asia imported 5.33 million TEUs from Europe, down 5.1%.
