The Port of Osaka processed 166,982 TEUs of oceangoing containers in July, which shrank 11% from the same month of 2022, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the Osaka Ports and Harbors Bureau. The port posted a year-on-year contraction for two back-to-back months. The total consisted of 75,395 TEUs of exports, down 12%, and 91,587 TEUs of imports, down 10%.

Focusing on loaded containers, which totaled 121,433 TEUs, down 9%, exports increased 4% to 34,043 TEUs, but imports incurred a double-digit decline of 13% to amount to 87,390 TEUs. Empties plunged 16% to 45,549 TEUs.

In the first seven months (January-July), 1.15 million TEUs were transported to and from Osaka, which fell 6% from the corresponding months of the previous year. Exports accounted for 530,604 TEUs, down 4%, while the remaining 617,156 TEUs were imported, down 7%. As for laden containers, 223,054 TEUs were exported, down 4%, and 597,032 TEUs were imported, down 9%, for a total of 820,085 TEUs, down 7%. Empty containers decreased 1% to 327,674 TEUs.
