Container exports from 10 major Asian economies to the U.S. amounted to 1.53 million TEUs in July (based on volumes at ports of origin where carriers are loaded with containers), which plunged 12.7% from a year earlier and have been on the decline for 12 months running, Descartes Datamyne says in reference to Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) and bill-of-lading (B/L) data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). From a month earlier, however, there was an improvement of 4.2%.

By country, containers from China plummeted 15.1% to 908,100 TEUs, which have trended down for the 11th consecutive month. Those from South Korea were down 0.4% to 176,729 TEUs; from Vietnam, down 12.3% to 136,584 TEUs; from Singapore, up 8.7% to 66,881 TEUs; and from Taiwan, down 23.2% to 65,265 TEUs. Exports from Japan, which ranked eighth place, shrank 12.4% to 29,426 TEUs.

Container imports to the U.S. totaled 2.18 million TEUs in July, which slid 11.7% year on year but picked up 5.5% from June.

In the first seven months, the Asian nations exported 5.56 million TEUs to the U.S., which plummeted 23.7% year on year.

Meanwhile, imports from the U.S. to the 10 leading countries and regions in Asia were sluggish in June, falling 14.1% from the same month of 2022 to 387,586 TEUs (based on volumes at ports of final destination). Containers to China were down 9.2% to 105,587 TEUs; to Japan, down 12.2% to 48,695 TEUs; to South Korea, down 11.8% to 43,229 TEUs; and to India, down 24.5% to 37,021 TEUs.
