China processed an aggregated 149.19 million TEUs of containers in the first half (January-June), up 4.6% year on year, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the nation’s transport ministry. Coastal ports were responsible for 130.88 million TEUs, up 4.2%, and inland river ports, 18.31 million TEUs, up 9.7%.

Shanghai was the busiest port in the country, handling 23.74 million TEUs, up 5.3%. Ranked second was Ningbo-Zhoushan, which processed 17.68 million TEUs, up 1.2%. At the bottom of the top three was Qingdao, which handled 13.94 million TEUS, up 11.7%.

The greatest increase was registered in northern ports, where combined container throughput jumped 14% to 3.61 million TEUs and helped them finish in eighth place. Shenzhen was the only port among the top 10 to suffer a contraction in container lifting, which fell 6.1% to 13.53 million TEUs, at a time when double digit improvements were accomplished at Qingdao, 11.7%, and Rizhao, 10%.

In June, 27.12 million TEUs were traded to and from China, up 4.8%, consisting of 23.7 million TEUs to and from coastal ports, up 4.2%, and 3.42 million TEUs to and from inland river ports, up 9.3%.
