The U.S. port of Long Beach handled 758,225 TEUs of containers in May, which plummeted 14.9% from the same month of last year. From the previous month, however, there was an improvement of 15.6%. As for laden containers, 361,661 TEUs were imported, down 17.2%, and 127,870 TEUs were exported, up 8.1%. Looking at empty containers, 12,970 TEUs were imported, up 21.5%, and 255,725 TEUs were exported, down 21.3%.

In January-May, a total of 3,135,600 TEUs were moved to and from Long Beach, which shrank 24.8% from the corresponding five months of 2022. The port imported 1,472,626 TEUs of loaded containers, down 28%, and exported 600,586 TEUs, up 0.9%. Regarding empties, 70,653 TEUs were imported, down 19.2%, and 991,746 TEUs were exported, down 32.7%.

“At mid-year we’re starting to see signs that cargo volume is on the upswing, with our busiest month since August of last year,” said Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero. “We look forward to more positive signs in the months ahead.”
