Japan will consider helping Bangladesh recycle ships, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said. Kishida met with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday. In a joint statement, Hasina said that Dhaka intends to enter into the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention) within the year.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan, for its part, signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Ministry of Industries of Bangladesh. They will promote cooperation between their countries by encouraging experts and officials to interact with each other and making other efforts. They will also work together to have the Hong Kong Convention take effect in Bangladesh as soon as possible.
