Container exports from Japan to the U.S. amounted 54,744 TEUs in March (based on volumes at ports of origin in Japan), which surged 14.9% from the previous month but declined 5.8% from the same month of 2022, according to Descartes Datamyne.

Direct shipments from Japan to the U.S. accounted for 33,765 TEUs, which shrank 10.7% year on year. Those transshipped on the way came to 20,979 TEUs, exceeding the 20,000-TEU line for the first time in two months. They held a share of 38.3%, but it was smaller than in and before January, when they continued to have 40% or more shares. As for transshipment (T/S) containers, South Korea was responsible for 14,153 TEUs, which swelled 12.8%; and Taiwan, 3,380 TEUs, which increased a more notable 42.9%. In contrast, those transshipped in China plunged 23.7% to 2,433 TEUs and in Singapore, 54.6% to 539 TEUs.
