Japan exported 643,834 TEUs of containers to the U.S. in 2022 (based on volumes at ports of origin in Japan), which increased 10.5% from the previous year, according to Descartes Datamyne. Exceeding the 600,000-TEU line for the first time in three years, or since 2019, Japan's U.S. exports have returned to a pre-pandemic level.

Direct shipments amounted to 384,347 TEUs, which went down 5.9%. By port of origin in Japan, Tokyo was responsible for 162,108 TEUs, down 9.2%; Nagoya, 110,531 TEUs, down 5.8%; Kobe, 88,640 TEUs, down 2.1%; Yokohama, 10,677 TEUs, up 25.7%; and Shimizu, 4,802 TEUs, down 11.6%.

Meanwhile, 263,954 TEUs up 41.9% were transshipped on the way, which accounted for 41.0% of the total throughput on the route. More specifically, 167,213 TEUs were transshipped in South Korea, up 30.1%; 37,044 TEUs in China, up 34%; and 27,892 TEUs in Taiwan, up 134.7%.

In December alone, 57,907 TEUs were moved from Japan to the U.S., which surged 11.8% from the previous month and 38.3% from the same month of 2021.
