On Dec. 31-Jan. 4, 63 ports in Japan were available for cargo loading and unloading, a decline of two from a year earlier, and 811 ships underwent cargo loading and unloading services during the five days, a decrease of 69, according to the Japan Harbor Transportation Association (Nikkokyo).

The number of ships increased by eight at the Big Six ports but plunged by 77 at other major and local ports, the Nikkokyo reports, adding that the number of containerships hiked by 26 but that of conventional and other ships sank by some 50.

The number of ships having cargo handling work at the 63 ports went up year on year on Jan. 2 but down on the other days. The Nikkokyo analyzed that it was attributed to a decrease in the number of weekdays from three to two.

There were 261 container carriers at the 63 ports during the period, including 254 deployed in oceangoing services, an improvement of 23. In contrast, the volume of shipments handled diminished by 16,500 TEUs to approximately 110,000 TEUs.
