The U.S. government unveiled the U.S. National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization on Tuesday, intending to remove all emissions from the transportation sector by 2050.

In September 2022, the leaders of the departments of Energy, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and the Environmental Protection Agency signed a historic memorandum of understanding (MoU). As the most important tools to realize decarbonization in the transport sector, it suggests that zero-emission vehicles and fuels be introduced.

The MoU includes strategies for improving the convenience and efficiency of transport, as it is expected to reduce emissions; for dealing with high transport costs; and for providing fair, reasonable and easy-to-use transport modes.

In marine transport, batteries and electricity are regarded in the MoU as limited solutions for long-term possibilities. Hydrogen and sustainable liquid fuels will play major roles in the decarbonization from shipping by 2050, it points out.
