The average number of days for which ships remain at the world's top 20 container ports (based on 2021 volumes) was 2.09 in October, which decreased 6% from a year earlier but increased 0.8% from a month earlier, according to the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE). Container carriers were at anchor at the 20 ports for an average of 1.48 days, which plunged 17.1% from October 2021 but swelled 0.5% from September 2022. The Chinese port of Guangzhou recorded the shortest periods of time, where containerships stayed for 0.97 days on average, which fell 1% from the previous month, and were berthed for 0.68 days on average, which shortened 4.2%.

Container freighters were at major ports in China for an average of 1.56 days in October, which rose 9.8% from September, and moored at the ports for 0.97 days, which swelled 9%. At 11 non-Chinese major ports, container vessels stayed for 1.29 days on average, which augmented a notable 11.6%. At the Port of New York, a major port on the U.S. East Coast, in particular, container carriers stayed for an average of 3.5 days, which plunged 27.5%. At the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, both of which are major ports on the U.S. West Coast, vessels stayed for 5.34 days on average, which fell 10.7%, and for 4.26 days, which shrank 15.3%, respectively. Similar trends were seen at leading ports in Europe as well. The average numbers of days for which container carriers remained were 3.63 days at Hamburg, down 15%; 2.21 days at Rotterdam, down 7.9%; and 1.7 days at Antwerp, down 12.8%.
