Japan's six major ports (Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) handled a total of 1,094,310 TEUs of oceangoing containers in May, which shrank 2.3% from the corresponding month of last year, according to preliminary figures tallied by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). The total throughput consisted of 529,656 of exports, down 3.2%, and 564,654 TEUs of imports, down 1.5%.

In Kanto, Tokyo processed 354,004 TEUs, up 1.4%, exporting 156,502 TEUs, down 1.8%, and importing 197,502 TEUs, up 4%. Kawasaki was responsible for 9,546 TEUs, down 16.2%, which comprised 5,171 TEUs of exports, down 14.1%, and 4,375 TEUs of imports, down 18.5%. Exports and imports totaled 197,038 TEUs at Yokohama, down 5.8%, with the former accounted for 101,353 TEUs, down 6.1%, and the latter, 95,685 TEUs, down 5.5%. Nagoya handled 196,641 TEUs, down 4.6%, of which 102,383 TEUs were exported, down 2%, and 94,258 TEUs imported, down 7.2%. In Kansai, 73,352 TEUs were exported from Osaka, down 11.4%, and 89,964 TEUs were imported, down 5.9%, for a total of 163,316 TEUs, down 8.4%. Kobe exported 90,895 TEUs, up 4.9%, and imported, 82,870 TEUs, up 4.4%, which totaled 173,765 TEUs, up 4.7%.
