Container exports from Japan to the U.S. amounted to 55,503 TEUs in April, based on volumes at ports of destination, according to American trade data provider Descartes Datamyne. From the previous month, they decreased 4.6%, but from the same month of 2021, they only declined 0.8%. They incurred their first year-on-year contraction in four months but managed to remain nearly unchanged from a year earlier. From April 2020, they improved 9.1%, exceeding pre-pandemic levels for two back-to-back months.

Direct shipments from Japan to the U.S. plunged 26.3% to 29,206 TEUs. In contrast, containers transshipped on the way jumped 61.5% to 26,297 TEUs, accounting for 47.4% of the total and crossing the 40% mark for the first time. Those transshipped in South Korea surged 37.6% to 15,030 TEUs and in China, 66.2% to 4,585 TEUs. Containers transshipped in Taiwan almost quadrupled, skyrocketing 278.9% to 3,217 TEUs.
