A total of 54 ships (including 27 cargo carriers) were lost in 2021, major German insurance company Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty (AGCS) unveils in an analytical report on accidents involving large ships (100 gross tons and over) that it published on Tuesday. The total number was smaller by 11 than the previous year and by 57% than the average of 127 for the last 10 years, according to the report, entitled “Safety & Shipping Review 2022.”

By region, 12 were lost in South China, Indochina, Indonesia and the Philippines in total, which was greater than any other region. Although the number of total losses decreased, shipping casualties and incidents increased to 3,000. Their leading cause was machinery damage and failure, which accounted for more than one-third, totaling 1,311 cases. Also common were collision, which numbered 222, and fires, 178, which grows nearly 10% annually.
