Outbound containers from Japan to China amounted to 832,085 tons in December 2021, which shrank 11% from a year earlier and marked a year-on-year decrease for the eighth month in a row, according to data compiled by the Japan Maritime Center from trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). On a value scale, in contrast, they surged 10.1% to ¥907.2 billion, registering a year-on-year increase for 13 straight months.

Imports from China to Japan, on the other hand, swelled 8.4% to 1,856,852 tons, enjoying a year-on-year improvement for 13 months in a row. In terms of value, they soared 20.5% to ¥1.299 trillion, rising from a year earlier for seven consecutive months.

In 2021, container exports from Japan to China totaled 9,418,000 tons in volume, down 4.8%, and ¥9.579 trillion in value, up 18.3%. Inbound containers from China to Japan hiked 8.9% to 21,489,000 tons, which were valued at ¥14.059 trillion, up 14%.
