The Port of Shimizu handled a total of 47,083 TEUs of domestic and international containers in December 2021, according to preliminary statistics. Going down 3.8% from the same month of 2020, it was the first year-on-year contraction in 11 months. On a full-year scale, however, containers to and from the port improved 9.4% from the previous year to 562,610 TEUs in total last year. There was an increase of 0.9% from 2019, showing that throughput at Shimizu has returned to pre-pandemic levels.

In 2021, loaded and unloaded foreign-trade containers to and from Shimizu accounted for 447,357 TEUs, up 4.6%, consisting of 227,362 TEUs of exports, up 5.9%, and 219,995 TEUs of imports, up 3.3%. Focusing on full containers, 183,125 TEUs were exported, up 13.4%, and 207,968 TEUs imported, up 2.1%, for a total of 391,093 TEUs, up 7.1%. Empty container exports and imports, meanwhile, totaled 56,264 TEUs, down 10%.
