Containerized shipments moved between Japan and South Korea amounted to a total of 153,600 TEUs in October, hiking 0.2% from 153,400 TEUs in the same month of 2020 and registering year-on-year growth for seven straight months since April, according to the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC).

Exports and imports aggregated 60,000 TEUs, up 9%. They increased in both directions, with exports from South Korea to Japan rising 5% to 30,400 TEUs and imports from Japan to South Korea surging 13% to 29,600 TEUs. The latter was particularly brisk, maintaining double-digit improvements for seven months in a row, or since April.

In January-October, 1,476,200 TEUs were traded between the countries in total, swelling 2% year on year from 1,444,000 TEUs. Containers from South Korea to Japan accounted for 286,200 TEUs, up 2%; those from Japan to South Korea, 279,600 TEUs, up 20%; and transshipment cargo carried on the route, 910,400 TEUs, down 2%. Inbound shipments were lower in volume by around 3% than the corresponding 10 months of 2018, slightly before the ongoing trade dispute between Seoul and Tokyo took place, when 287,200 TEUs were transported.
