Containerized shipments on the trade between South Korea and Japan amounted to a total of 135,100 TEUs in August, which shrank 1% from 136,500 TEUs, incurring their first year-on-year decline in five months since March, according to the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC).

Exports and imports moved locally between the economies were, however, brisk, surging 16% to 53,000 TEUs in total. Containers from South Korea and from Japan both marked double-digit improvements, growing 11% to 27,200 TEUs and 21% to 25,800 TEUs, respectively. In contrast, shipments transshipped on the route fell 9% to 82,100 TEUs, suffering a year-on-year contraction for two months in a row since July. The rate of decline also enlarged, as it was 2% in July.

In January-August, a total of 1,177,300 TEUs were traded between the nations, swelling 1.8% from the 1,156,100 TEUs in the same eight months of 2020. South Korea exported 227,800 TEUs to Japan, up 2%, and imported 220,200 TEUs from Japan, up 18%. Meanwhile, the remaining 729,300 TEUs were transshipped, down 2%.
