Outbound container movement from Japan to China shrank 4.3% to weigh 740,843 tons in May, marking its first year-on-year contraction in three months, according to statistics unveiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). Its value, however, swelled 14.9% to ¥731.9 billion, accomplishing growth from a year earlier for the sixth month in a row.

Meanwhile, container imports from China to Japan hiked 1.9% to 1,741,040 tons, improving year on year for the first time after an interval of a month, indicated by the JMC statistics, which have been complied with traded statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). In terms of value, they decreased 2.8% to ¥1.095 trillion, incurring a year-on-year decline for two back-to-back months.

From the beginning of the year, exports from Japan to China amounted to a total of 3,885,000 tons in January-May, up 7.9%, which were priced at ¥3.729 trillion, up 23.8%. Imports in the other direction totaled 8,766,000 tons in volume, up 7.2%, and ¥5.489 trillion in value, up 10.8%.
