Container throughput improved year on year at all major ports in China in May, thanks to domestic and overseas economic recoveries. The total volume of containerized shipments handled at ports across the nation surged 12.5% to 24.4 million TEUs, according to statistics compiled by the local transport ministry. Both coastal and inland river ports performed well, registering double-digit increases in container volume, with the former processing 21.5 million TEUs, up 11.4%, and the latter, 2.92 million TEUs, up 21.2%.

In the first five months (January-May), a total of 113.91 million TEUs were moved to and from Chinese ports, up 16.8%. Coastal ports were responsible for 100.62 million TEUs, up 15.8%, and inland river ports, 13.29 million TEUs, up 24.8%.
