The combined volume of containerized shipments processed at Japan's six major ports (Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) came to 1,053,491 TEUs in February, enjoying a double-digit improvement of 16.1% from a year earlier, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). Exports increased a mild 4.2% to 528,269 TEUs, but imports were more massive, surging 31.1% to 525,555 TEUs. They are analyzed to have come back dramatically from February 2020, when they suffered a severe decrease due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Looking at volumes individually, Tokyo held the leading share, processing 329,348 TEUs, up 20.1%. Exports accounted for 149,734 TEUs, up 5.8%, while imports registered a double-digit increase of 35.5% to fill the balance of 179,614 TEUs. As for throughput at the other ports, 195,549 TEUs were moved to and from Nagoya, up 14.6%, comprising 105,821 TEUs of exports, up 4.5%, and 89,728 TEUs of imports, up 29.3%. Yokohama handled 193,929 TEUs, up 3.1%. Exports fell 4.8% to 105,126 TEUs, but imports grew 14.3% to 88,803 TEUs. Kobe was responsible for 169,380 TEUs, up 7.2%, exporting 92,580 TEUs, up 0.5%, and importing 76,800 TEUs, up 16.5%. Containers to and from Osaka soared 41.7% to 154,678 TEUs, of which 69,706 TEUs were exported, up 21.4%, and 84,972 TEUs were imported, up 64.3%. Kawasaki exported 5,302 TEUs, up 23.4%, and imported, 5,305 TEUs, up 57.7%, for a total of 10,607 TEUs, up 38.5%.
