Container exports from Japan to the U.S. amounted to 58,218 TEUs in March (based on volumes at ports of origin), which improved 2.7% from a year earlier thanks to growth in auto parts/components and others, American research company Descartes Datamyne announced recently. From a month earlier, there was a much more remarkable increase of 83.3%.

Shipments moved directly from Japan to the U.S. accounted for 43,206 TEUs, up 3.8% year on year. Those from Japan transshipped in third countries/regions, meanwhile, came to 15,012 TEUs, down 0.1%. Via transshipment in South Korea were 11,021 TEUs, up 6.3%; in China, 1,972 TEUs, down 4.8%; and in Taiwan, 695 TEUs, down 24.4%.

By origin in Japan, 20,432 TEUs were shipped from Tokyo, which remained nearly unchanged from March 2020 and accounted for the largest part of the overall container exports from Japan. Tokyo was followed by Nagoya, which was responsible for 12,206 TEUs, up 6%, while Kobe finished in third place, exporting 8,674 TEUs, up 18.3%. Shimizu became the fourth leading port of origin by handling 674 TEUs, down 6.6%. Ranked fifth were containers from Yokohama, which plunged 50.3% to 423 TEUs.
