The container ship ''Ever Given'' has been held by an Egyptian court pending a compensation payment of US$916 million which the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has officially claimed for damage caused by the ship's stranding in the canal.

The detained container ship, which blocked ship traffic in the Suez Canal at the end of last month as it ran aground about six nautical miles from the southern entrance of the Egyptian waterway, has been stationary in the Great Bitter Lake, the largest reservoir of the canal, since March 29.

The Egyptian government has confirmed the seizure of the container carrier as the ship's owner company, the Japanese Shoei Kisen Kaisha, does not intend to pay Egypt a compensation of $916 million for the damage caused by the naval accident including expenses necessary to put the container ship back on the waterline and to tow it as well as the losses generated by the interruption of maritime traffic in the canal for six days.
