Total volume of containerized shipments traded between South Korea and Japan in 2020 decreased 9% year on year from 1,902,900 TEUs to 1,735,200 TEUs, according to statistics compiled by the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC). Transport demand on the route shrank due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which worsened in the midst of the trade dispute between the nations.

In breakdown, exports from South Korea to Japan accounted for 336,500 TEUs, which went down 9% from 370,000 TEUs. Meanwhile, imports from Japan to South Korea were more sluggish, suffering a double-digit contraction of 11% from 320,000 TEUs to 288,100 TEUs. Transshipment (T/S) containers totaled 1,110,600 TEUs, which slid 8% from 1,208,000 TEUs.
