Container volumes handles at Japan's 64 ports totaled 8,662,233 TEUs in the first half of 2020 (Jan - June), a decline of 7.4% compared to the same period last year, according to the Harbor Modernization Promotion Committee. Of the total, the main 12 ports, which include Tokyo, Yokohama, Shimizu, Nagoya, Yokkaichi, Osaka, Kobe, Kitakyushu, Chiba, Kawasaki, Shimonoseki and Hakata, accounted the lion's share of 7,539,197 TEU, down 7.9% from a year earlier, while the remaining 52 ports processed 1,123,036 TEUs, down 4.3% year on year.

All in all, loaded export containers dwindled by 13.1% on year to 2,514,208 TEUs while loaded imports also shrank by 6.2% to 4,110,782 TEUs.
