Outbound containers from Japan to the U.S. amounted to 37,233 TEUs in September, which plunged 21.2% from a year earlier, according to statistics compiled by American research company Descartes Datamyne. Those directly exported from Japan accounted for 29,813 TEUs, down 12.8%, while the balance of 7,420 were moved via transshipment, down 43%, including 5,189 TEUs transshipped in South Korea, down 39.2%.

In the first nine months (January-September), Japan exported 387,767 TEUs to the U.S., down 21.4%. It consisted of 289,737 TEUs traded directly between the economies, down 20.9%, and the remaining 98,030 TEUs were transshipped in third countries/regions, down 22.7%.

Meanwhile, container imports from the U.S. to Japan shrank 16.2% to 50,715 TEUs in August, according to volumes measured at final destinations. In breakdown, 40,883 TEUs were imported directly to Japan, down 14.7%, and 6,549 TEUs were via transshipment, down 26.2%.
