After coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdowns were lifted, freight movement to the U.S. and Europe increased sharply in July and August, leading to empty container pileups in export destinations. Asian countries and regions, where there are many manufacturing facilities, are, as such, suffering from a shortage of empty containers for exports. In Asia, in addition, shipping services have been often suspended and cancelled to China, South Korea and Japan due to adverse weather conditions, keeping such economies from preparing empty containers. This is also accelerating the container shortage in the region.

Demand for transporting containers to the U.S. is expected to remain powerful until mid-October, thanks to briskness in e-commerce-related products as well as masks, gloves and other medical supplies. Consequently, it is expectrd the container shortage in Asia will be continue for a much longer period of time.
