The Port of Osaka handled a total of 1,005,005 TEUs of loaded and unloaded oceangoing containers in the first half (January-June) of 2020, down 3% from a year earlier, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the city of Osaka’s Port and Harbor Bureau.

Exports and imports both decreased, going down 2% to 460,553 TEUS and 4% to 544,452 TEUs, respectively. As for full containers, exports shrank 9% to 186,129 TEUs, and imports, 2% to 532,949 TEUs for a total of 719,078 TEUs, down 4%. Meanwhile, empties remained nearly unchanged at 285,927 TEUs in total.

In June alone, Osaka processed 182,656 TEUs of loaded and unloaded foreign-trade containers, up 6%. The total was made up of 87,965 TEUs of outgoing shipments, up 4%, and 94,691 TEUs of incoming shipments, up 8%. Loaded containers accounted for 124,110 TEUs, up 2%. Exports of full containers suffered a double-digit contraction, plunging 17% to 30,794 TEUs; in contrast, imports enjoyed a double-digit improvement of 10% to amount to 93,316 TEUs.
