In the period from July 1 to 10, combined container throughput at Big Eight coastal ports in China improved 3.4% from a year earlier, according to a survey conducted by the China Ports and Harbours Association (CPHA). Export and import containers increased 1.5% in total, but double-digit growth was even registered at Xiamen and Guangzhou. As transport demand was recovering mildly, major shipping lines decreased the number of services that they had suspended. On the Asia/west coast of North America route, in particular, they resumed services on a large scale.

Containers to and from three major ports along the Yangtze River (Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing) only increased a minute 0.2%, although those to and from Wuhan swelled 4.9%, greater than growth marked at the other two ports. Floods in the Yangtze River area are having an adverse impact on ports, harbors and shipping operations. Some ports and harbors even need to close facilities temporarily.
